Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What is PMP Certification?

The Project Management Professional (PMP) credential recognizes demonstrated knowledge and skill in leading and directing project teams and in delivering project results within the constraints of schedule, budget and resources. It is accredited by the Project Management Institute (PMI), USA, which is the leading global association for the project management profession.

Q2. Who should apply for PMP Certification?

Those who lead and direct cross-functional teams to deliver projects within the constraints of schedule, budget, and scope.

Q3. What do PMP candidates do??

Candidates are responsible for all aspects of individual projects for the life of the project.

Q4. What does 36 months of non-overlapping experience requirement mean for the PMP Exam?

One of the eligibility criteria for the PMP exam is to have minimum 3 years / 36 months unique non-overlapping professional project management experience during which at least 4,500 hours were spent leading and directing project tasks. So, what does “non-overlapping” experience mean? To answer this question, let me show the reverse situation - overlapping experience. Let’s say that you have managed 2 project in 2013. Project 1 ran from Jan’13 to Jun’13 (6 months), and Project 2 ran from Apr’13 to Dec’13 (9 months). In this case, you have an overlap between the two projects during Apr’09 to Jun’09 (3 months). So the experience from these 3 months is counted as 3 months, and not 3 x 2 = 6 months. Therefore, your total unique non-overlapping experience would be counted as 12 (3 + 3 + 6) months, not 15 (6 + 9) months.

Q5. How far back can I go for the Project Management experience on my PMP application?

All project management experience must have been accrued within the last eight consecutive years prior to your application submission.

Q6. I am working in Industry X. Can I use my projects for PMP eligibility?

Yes, you can. The type of projects or industry does not matter. Your projects should conform to the PMI's definition of a project.

Q7. My designation is not Project Manager? Can I apply for the exam?

Yes. You can apply for the exam if you have minimum (4500/7500 hours) PM experience. You designation or title in an organization has little significance.

Q8. What is meant by "project management experience in a leading role"?

It means that you should have held a position of responsibility in your project(s). e.g you might be managing a team, taking decisions related to schedule, cost, or risk, involved in client engagement, managing vendor(s) etc

Q9. Can I apply for the exam if I only have experience of working in Projects?

No. Simply working in projects as a team member is not enough. You should have worked in a leading or directing role.
